BAPTISM

Baptism is a next step for anyone who has entered into a personal relationship with God by responding in faith to the forgiveness offered in Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 10:9-10). Baptism is the act of being immersed in water ((example: Matthew 3:16, Acts 8:38) in order to represent the cleansing power of Christ in our lives ((see Matthew 28:19-20 and Acts 2:38). This happens when we trust in God alone for our salvation through Christ’s death and resurrection. Baptism, then, is an outward demonstration of an inner transformation. Baptism can be likened to a wedding ring. Putting on the ring doesn’t make a person married, but it does visibly communicate a committed love relationship. Baptism itself doesn’t save us (just as putting on a wedding ring doesn’t make us married). Neither does a lack of baptism condemn us (as a person may be married without wearing a ring). But it makes sense to do both. Baptism has great meaning when it occurs after responding by faith to Christ.
